A senior official of the UT excise and taxation department said for running bars in their establishments, hoteliers first have to pay the licence fee for the operational period of 2020-21. After the license fee, the department will then issue permits to open bars.
He said Tuesday was the first day to pay the license fee and the department earned Rs 2 crore.
Giving reasons behind the delay in the opening of the outlets, Neeraj Kharab, who runs various eating outlets, said they didn’t open their outlets as conditions were not favorable. “As the government has now allowed the opening of bars, therefore, we will open the business. But first, we have to arrange for the staff members, who have gone to their native places, and minor repair work is to be done. It will take us a week’s time and we will be able to open by next week,” he said.
Echoing a similar view, Surya Dogra, another restaurant owner, said they would first have to make arrangements due to Covid-19. There are a number of operational hiccups like staff etc. which need to be taken care of before opening the outlet.
He said he would sit with his partners and accordingly would open a restaurant and bar next week. According to the excise policy, the bar timings for the purpose of sale, service, and consumption is 11 am to 1 am (past midnight) throughout the year, except on dry days. The last order for liquor will not be booked post-midnight.
